How does a Healthcare System Affect a Community?

In 2003 Blue Ridge HealthCare community benefits totalled $15,660,304. In 2004 this figure rose just over 40 % to $21,946,718. That's services we provided without compensation. The services we provided in 2004 included:

  • Charity and Uncompensated Care: $17,719,317
  • Net losses to provide Medicaid Services: $3,246,000
  • Community programs and services: $405,283
  • Free services to Good Samaritan Clinic: $260,000
  • Health Professional Training Programs: $154,613
  • General Tax Payments on Commercial Enterprises: $132,806
  • Miscellaneous charitable programs and services: $28,699

In 2004 BRHC cared for:

  • 52,231 emergency room patients
  • 11,679 inpatient hospitalizations
  • 68,366 outpatient visits
  • 28,530 home visits
  • 190,319 days of care including long term care patients

Blue Ridge HealthCare is Burke County’s only not-for-profit system and provides the majority of hospital-based charity care in the community. In addition to the tremendous amount of charity care, BRHC also provided a large number of other health related support to the community in 2004, all with no tax support from the community.

Blue Ridge HealthCare is Burke County’s largest private employer with over 1700 employees and annual salary and benefit costs of $65,064,555.
